PROFILE OF MARY GHANSAH

The Rev. Dr. Mary Ghansah, affectionately dubbed as the lady-with-the-guitar is one such a woman that has come to symbolize the Woman-of-God in Ghana, through the utilization of her providential talent and the agility in the delivery of her musical prowess. The out-pour of testimonies that are been meted to her presence suggests she is such a person that has touched the lives of many and arrested lots of souls to the custody of God, through her ministrations. Rev. Mary qualifies as one of a kind that is the making of her own pedigree and in fact could be numbered as a virtuous woman, if ever there is a company of them around. This is also a woman that time has become the rightful judge of the controversy that surrounded her pioneering work in the gospel music industry of Ghana.

Born to the late Mr. Joseph Ghansah and Madam Elizabeth Anderson all partly from Senya Breku, Anumabu, Saltpond and Accra in the Central and Greater Accra Regions of Ghana, on the Wednesday of May 13, 1959. Rev. Mary began her life in Tema with her Pentecostal parents, now of the Fadama branch of the Church of Pentecost in Accra. Rev. Mary is the eldest of five siblings that comprise of two other women and two men.

Rev. Mary had her basic education at Tema Aggrey Road School; her secondary education at the Kwahuman Secondary School at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region and Breman Esikuma Secondary School in the Central Region of Ghana in the 1980’s. Rev. Mary is a product of the then P&T Engineering College of Ghana, where she pursued a career leading to telephone receptionist.  She has strive to complete her tertiary education at The Glory Leadership College, where she studied theology and counseling.

The man in the life of Rev. Mary is Mr. Carl Wiafe, a communications consultant, who has become the invisible rock behind her career. Mr. Wiafe indeed is a supportive and a loving husband, who allows her the free hand to operate and never mind leaving his job behind to accompany her on many of her career tours.

Mary became a musician at the time she discovered her potentials with the Power House Evangelistic Ministry at Tema in 1974 at the age of 15 years. The noble brains behind her aspirations were Pastor Apenteng the founder of Church on the Rock in Koforidua and Morrison Dove who at the time was a student. These personalities were the directors God sent into the beginning parts of her musical career. They encouraged, guided her in songs ministrations and writings. They indeed had time for her and she can say with pride that their counsel has never been in vain.

Before Mary became an independent musician, she was a member of the Power House Evangelistic Ministry in 1974 and the Glorious Vibration Incorporated in1978. While with the Power House Evangelistic Ministry, Mary fellowshipped with Dr. Mensah Otabil the founder and the head pastor of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) Rev. Edwin Otabil of the USA, Mr. Harold Otabil, Pastor Apenteng, Mr. Morrison Dove, Mrs. Grace Tweneboah, Rev. & Mrs. Acquah, Dr. Fletcher of the USA, Rev,Dr. Gordon Kisseh founder of the Miracle Life Gospel Church, and many others.

“Praise & Worship in Zion” was the three-day evangelism fiesta at the Meridian Hotel in Tema that catapulted Rev. Mary into her ministration career in 1986. Ever since then Rev. Mary has criss-crossed Ghana with her team of musicians and evangelists in a crusade to impart the Word of God to the many youth in second cycle educational institutions and churches. There are a lot of them that have been healed of their sicknesses, delivered from their spiritual bondage and those souls that have been arrested to the custody of the Almighty God. All these have featured in the testimonies that have been showered unto her by the many that she now meets in the cities, towns and villages of Ghana.

Rev. Mary is a talented gospel musician of our era; a prolific song writer, who composes her own songs. Above all her stage craft in delivering her performances surpasses many in the gospel industry. Even though confronted daily with production, marketing and financial challenges just like any other musician, she never thought of turning her back to her musical career.

In the forty years of her career as a renowned gospel musician, Mary has had to her credit over twenty gospel music Albums of which ONIPA BEN NI and NYAME NDAE are her favourite. She has also won many awards, which include: the Entertainment Critics and Reviewers Association of Ghana (ECRAG) Award for Best IN CONSISTENCY Gospel Album of the Year-1993; Unity Award; Freedom Concert Award-2013;  and the Foot Print Music Award-2012,  all to the Glory of God. Her musical career has granted her the opportunity to travel to France, Belgium, Togo, Ivory Coast, UK, USA, and many other places in Ghana. Some of Mary’s worship songs have been adopted for worshiping by the Christian churches in Ghana. Controversy surrounded her earlier musical career, when she pioneered music albums that featured worship songs-in-tongue; the kind of lyrics was considered to be an anathema to the music and press fraternity of the country.

Mary Ghansah has a lot of admirers including fellow musicians like Stella Ahenewa Dugan who professed that she admires Mary Ghansah a lot because of her tenacity in music, and the Daughters of Glorious Jesus who take her as their mentor. Some of Mary’s music contemporaries have been the singing duo of the Tagoe Sisters, who she has been in constant communion with.

Currently, Rev. Mary is a member of the ICGC Calvary Temple at Sakumono, where she leads in their Praise and Worship sessions of the church. She loves cleaning and like being alone. She also admires nature and love being around God’s creations. Rice with kontomire or cabbage stew goes for her best food.
Rev. Mary is the founder of Open Heavens Church, Shakina Temple, Ashiama, Tema.              Rev. Mary also serves on the boards of some statutory and corporate institutions. These include:
● Deputy Director of Gospel Music, MUSIGA
● Member of the Ghana Gospel Industry Award Board
● Former Member of GAMRO board
● Board Member, Star of Hope( Swedish NGO)

Kofi Annan dead at 80: Former UN Secretary-General dies

Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has died.
The Ghanaian died at a hospital in Switzerland, Saturday morning after short illness, Joy News can confirm. He was 80.
Mr Annan served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006.
Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. He is the founder and chairman of the Kofi Annan Foundation, as well as chairman of The Elders, an international organization founded by Nelson Mandela.
Annan was born in Kumasi, Annan went on to study economics at Macalester College, international relations from the Graduate Institute Geneva and management at MIT. He joined the UN in 1962, working for the World Health Organization's Geneva office.
He then went on to work in several capacities at the UN Headquarters including serving as the Under-Secretary-General for peacekeeping between March 1992 and December 1996.
Annan was appointed as the Secretary-General on 13 December 1996 by the Security Council, and later confirmed by the General Assembly, making him the first officeholder to be elected from the UN staff itself. He was re-elected for a second term in 2001, and was succeeded as Secretary-General by Ban Ki-moon on 1 January 2007.
As the Secretary-General, Annan reformed the UN bureaucracy; worked to combat HIV, especially in Africa; and launched the UN Global Compact.
He has been criticized for not expanding the Security Council and faced calls for resignation after an investigation into the Oil-for-Food Programme.
After leaving the UN, he founded the Kofi Annan Foundation in 2007 to work on international development. In 2012, Annan was the UN–Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria, to help find a resolution to the ongoing conflict there.
Annan quit after becoming frustrated with the UN's lack of progress with regard to conflict resolution. In September 2016, Annan was appointed to lead a UN commission to investigate the Rohingya crisis.
It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness. His wife Nane and their children Ama, Kojo and Nina were by his side during his last days.
Kofi Annan was a global statesman and a deeply committed internationalist who fought throughout his life for a fairer and more peaceful world. During his distinguished career and leadership of the United Nations he was an ardent champion of peace, sustainable development, human rights and the rule of law.
After stepping down from the United Nations, he continued to work tirelessly in the cause of peace through his chairmanship of the Kofi Annan Foundation and as chair of The Elders, the group founded by Nelson Mandela. He was an inspiration to young and old alike.
Kofi Annan was a son of Ghana and felt a special responsibility towards Africa.  He was particularly committed to African development and deeply engaged in many initiatives, including his chairmanship of the Africa Progress Panel and his early leadership of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).
Wherever there was suffering or need, he reached out and touched many people with his deep compassion and empathy. He selflessly placed others first, radiating genuine kindness, warmth and brilliance in all he did.  He will be greatly missed by so many around the world, as well as his staff at the Foundation and his many former colleagues in the United Nations system.  He will remain in our hearts forever.
The family kindly requests privacy at this time of mourning. Arrangements to celebrate his remarkable life will be announced later.

Bible not against Polygamy – Pastor tells Christian men

A pastor and marriage researcher Daniel Eshun says Christian men can marry more than one wife because the Bible does not speak against polygamy.
According to him, there is no point in the bible where God or any of the prophets spoke against marrying more than a wife.
The long-standing preacher and author of marriage books said if the growing difference in numbers between men and women is not addressed, many women will not have husbands in the future.
“At what point did Polygamy become a sin? There is nothing that says that Christian man cannot have more than one wife.  The Adam and Eve story is one that is used to support monogamy. There is a lot of figurative language used by Moses in Genesis.  The first 5 books of the Bible was written for the Jewish People. We cannot sit in Accra, UK or elsewhere and interpret the first 5 books of the Bible. If we want the right interpretation, we have to talk to the Jewish people. The Jewish people believe in both monogamous and polygamous.
“ A man who wishes to marry more wives cannot take his wife by surprise. He is to inform his existing wife first.  In 2020, we will have about 3 million women between the ages of 15 and 25 who will not have husbands if we do nothing about it. We have side chicks in Africa because the church is not teaching the people the right thing, ” the Pastor at the One Faith Church told Francis Abban on the Morning Starr.
However in response, a fellow pastor, Prophet Kofi Oduro, of the Alabaster International  Ministry said Christians must not be confused about God’s position on marriage. He said the teachings of the bible does not support polygamy.
“There is no where that the scripture validates polygamy in the New Testament. We need to understand the different dispensation that man lived in. It is lust that draws married men to other women even though some will give other reasons. But it is lust. We shall all give account unto God. We should be careful what we do”.

I’m ready to do music for any political party in return for cash – Yaw Sarpong

Legendary Ghanaian Gospel musician, Yaw Sarpong has confirmed he is prepared to feature in the campaign song of any political party should the opportunity avail itself.

According to him, his decision to do it is not because he has finally found trust in political parties in the country or is a member of any of them but it is borne out of business.

Yaw Sarpong said this in response to a question as to whether he is ready to do music for any political party in the country.

“Music is my work and I need money as well so I will do it, take the money and offer some to God”, he revealed in an interview with Sikka Fm monitored by MyNewsGh.com’s Syxtus Eshun in Kumasi.

To him, music is his business hence he is ready to record a song for any political party on the basis of business and not affiliation.

“I will do it with my band, therefore, any amount that will be sufficient for the operational cost of the band group is oK”, he affirmed.

On the other hand, Yaw Sarpong made it clear that he is not ready to tolerate any “God Bless You” as a form of appreciation for the job.

When asked which political party he belongs to, the legend said, “For politics, I have no affiliation because politicians are some kind of people who can easily mess up your music career with their utterances. Today one will say this and the next day the other will say something else”. He told Tony Montana the host of the show “Flavour Zone”.

Yaw Sarpong who has 26 albums to his credit is set to release yet another song with Sarkcess Music Boss Sarkodie this year.

I Lost Out On A Job Because Of My Image-Shatta Michy

Michelle Diamond Gbagonah popularly known as Michy or Shatta Michy has disclosed in an interview how she lost out on a job because of her involvement in the entertainment industry. Michy who is the baby mama and on and off girlfriend of the dancehall king Shatta Wale, says although she lost out on a job because of showbiz, she’s also grateful because of it’s opened doors for her as well.
In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, she spoke about how she cannot do the things normal people could easily do because she’s in the limelight and recounted how she lost out on a job just because the panel felt she couldn’t be working in two industries that are very demanding.
“You know, there are times you want to be alone, have some intimate moments, go about your activities like any other person would but because you are in the light, you cannot and sometimes it is not all that good,” she told Showbiz in an interview.
Apart from not being able to do certain things, Michy also disclosed that she had missed out on some opportunities because of her involvement in show business.
‘I remember at Ghana Meets Naija in 2016, I had an interview the Monday after the event for a cabin crew job. Then I came showing things on stage, with my hair dyed red like that.
“So on Monday, I went before the panel which was the final stage. They asked me if I was into showbiz because they wanted to know how I was going to juggle the two as both industries are really demanding. I tried denying, the truth is that, I did not go with the red hair, I dyed it back to its black colour.
“As I kept denying, one of the panellists just showed me a newspaper with me in my Ghana Meets Naija outfit and here I was dumbfounded. I could have gotten the job easily because the people realised that I was good at what I wanted to do, I am actually trained in that. So yes, being in the entertainment fraternity has helped but I have had its downside too,” she said.
She added, “when it all started, I didn’t know how to do some things, like what to wear, how to behave, how to talk, I just didn’t understand the industry then but now, it is not like that. I have learnt the game that is how come I can sometimes cut the world off, no social media; no friends, just me having my time.
Michy is 25 and has been Shatta Wale’s ride or die girlfriend for years and they have a son together. Although they had some relationship issues this year, it seems they have resolved their differences and are back together again according to Shatta Wale.
Shatta Wale has hinted they will be dropping another song very soon.

Shocked father of late Ebony fires back at Bullet

The father of late songstress Ebony Reigns, Nana Opoku Kwarteng, has expressed shock over the decision by former manager of his daughter, Ricky Nana Agyeman, to hand over her unreleased songs to him.
The songstress, who died in an accident in February, 2018, is said to have many unreleased songs to her credit.
In a release dated August 14, 2018, Mr Agyeman, popularly known as Bullet, who is the CEO of managers Rufftown Records, noted that he was giving all songs recorded by Ebony to her father.
READ: Bullet ‘kills’ Ebony’s songs
The release came a day after Mr. Kwarteng had accused Bullet of cheating him and not properly accounting for proceeds from his late daughter’s funeral.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s News 360, Mr. Kwarteng said he did not expect Bullet to freely hand over his late daughter’s unreleased songs in the manner he did.
“I never knew he was going to put those things out there. Let me be honest, I was damn shocked, seriously shocked.”
He said he least expected Bullet to give out the songs without taking any money from him.
“Once upon a time, I asked you; I wanted to take them when we went to the lawyer, he said Nana, pay me some money and take this, so I was about to do that when my lawyer said ‘No, leave it for now’,” Mr. Kwarteng said.
He further denied allegations leveled against him by Bullet on social media.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, August 14, Bullet noted that he had given all proceeds from a tribute concert held in Ohio to the late Ebony’s father, among other monies made from the donations and concerts in memory of the late songstress.
But Mr. Kwarteng denied knowledge of any concert in Ohio.
“The Ohio thing, I know nothing about it,” he noted.
He also insisted that he only received an amount of GHÈ»2,000 from donations and money made from Ebony’s funeral.
